Photographic Practice

Browse Image Galleries
Aishling sees and experiences most of her life visually, vibrantly and often from behind the lens or some sort of digital media. Over the years she has come to relate to her eclectic photographic arts practice as a dance, one between the photographer (herself) & her subject matter. Depending on the shoot she sometimes dances to a slow rhythm, carefully crafting her work and other times she finds herself adapting to a fast pace as a scene plays out before her eyes and lens.

The trick for her has been in learning how to behave in each situation in order to capture what she feels, sees and experiences playing out both inside and outside of herself.

What both of these styles of working share in common are that in all cases she finds herself staying present and reactive within the scene by not exerting her full control over her environments. Initially trained to work as a cog within the wheel of the mass media machine she considering herself to be as far as you can get from a studio or commercially based photographer.

Over the years Aishling has worked with traditional portraiture, travel, documentary, montage, reportage, classical landscape, abstract & fine art photography. She has also shared many workshops infecting others with her passion for the medium leading them to discover their voice with their cameras .

Since 2019 Aishling is a member of FÍSL Félag íslenskra samtímaljósmyndara (The Icelandic Contemporary Photography Association). Aishling is usually found shooting with a mirror less Leica system, the Leica M9P & the Leica M TYP 240 working with a 21mm 35mm & sometimes a 90mm lens.

She currently works on personal projects between Sweden, Ireland & Iceland.

Aishling's work reflects with great precision her beautiful and enlightening personality. Contemplating her images is like transporting yourself into each one of those places, it's an ethereal feeling which leaves you desiring to sample more.
- Fernanda Ogassawara

Aishling started her journey with photography at a very young age chasing butterflies in the garden. She stepped into the darkroom for the first time in 1999 as part of her training in Journalism in Ballyfermot College of Further Education. From there she went on to specializes in the medium as part of her Audio/Visual Degree at Tallaght Institute of Technology.

It was from here that she really stepped into exploring the photographic medium as a tool for her expression. She focused her efforts on the documentary genre and created her final thesis around the topic of truth and representation within the genre. She further deepened her own knowledge in the field by
simultaneously documenting three questionable sites of progress and development within the Irish landscape at that time as her final photographic project.

This fueled her interest in the medium even deeper which led on to a life changing and inspirational internship program with Magnum Photos in New York City in 2006. This trip forever changed Aishling's relationship to photography, as she had now become exposed to some great minds and passionate hearts working within the international field. Returning home inspired she pursued the creative path taking a Masters in Art in the Digital World in NCAD Dublin. Although Aishling's arts practice remains eclectic she considers photography and lens based media to be her core medium for self expression.

Aishling has been exhibiting her photographic works since 2007 and has continued with her training participating in workshops with Magnum Photos in both London and Barcelona as well as workshops with Kolga Festival in Tbilisi Georgia.
